Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to aerate and overseed?
In New Jersey, late August through October is prime time. Soil is warm, air is cooling, and weeds are diminishing - perfect for seed germination. Spring is secondary but fall is always preferred.
How long until I see the new grass?
With proper watering, you'll see sprouts in 7-14 days. Significant fill-in happens over 4-6 weeks as the new grass establishes.
Should I pick up the plugs?
No! The soil plugs will break down and return nutrients to your lawn. They typically disappear within 2-3 weeks of mowing and rainfall.
How much do I need to water?
Keep seeded areas consistently moist for the first 2-3 weeks. Light watering 2-3 times per day is ideal. Once established, return to your normal watering schedule.
Will the aeration holes make my lawn look messy?
The holes are small (about the size of a dime) and the plugs are typically gone within 1-2 weeks. The short-term mess is worth the long-term improvement!
Can you walk on newly seeded areas?
Minimize foot traffic for the first 3-4 weeks while new grass is establishing. After the first mowing (around 4 weeks), light traffic is fine.
