New to Ridgewood - my tall fescue is turning brown in this July heat! Am I watering enough?!
Watering Schedule NJ Summer

Hi everyone, just bought a house in Ridgewood back in May and I have a mature tall fescue lawn that looked gorgeous when we moved in. But now in this July heat I'm waking up to brown patches and I'm panicking that I killed my lawn already! I'm watering once a day around 6am for about 20 minutes with my sprinklers. Is that enough? Do I need to water more frequently? I've never dealt with NJ summer heat before and I don't know if this is normal dormancy or if I'm actually killing it. Please help, I'm stressed!

Whoa, hold up - DON'T panic yet! Brown in July on tall fescue is super common, especially here in Ridgewood with our clay soil. What you're describing sounds like heat stress dormancy, which is totally normal. But here's the thing - watering once a day at 6am might not be enough. Fescue needs about 1-1.5 inches of water per week including rainfall. I'd recommend watering deeper but less frequently - maybe 2-3 times a week for 30-40 minutes. Also, are you watering with town water or well water? Because if you're on the Ridgewood system, your pressure might not be great for thorough soaking.

Agree with WW - deep watering is key. When I first moved to Paramus I made the same mistake and was watering every morning lightly. My lawn guy (shoutout to GrassGuru) told me I was basically just wetting the top quarter inch which encourages shallow roots. Start watering early evening so there's less evaporation. And honestly? Some browning is expected in late July - our humidity here in Bergen County is brutal. Check if the crowns are still green by parting the grass. If they pull up easily though, you've got a problem.

Quick question - what height are you cutting at? If you're mowing too short that's making it way worse. Tall fescue should be at least 3.5-4 inches in summer, ideally higher. Also, are you mulching or bagging? I'd switch to mulching the clippings if you're not already - adds moisture back. I picked up a Honda Mower from DeSalvo's in Hackensack last year and the mulching blade made a huge difference. What equipment are you using?

I've been maintaining lawns in Bergen County for 15 years - this is THE question I get every July. Let me break it down: 1) Water deeply 2x/week, NOT daily light watering. 2) Raise your mower deck to 4 inches minimum. 3) DON'T fertilize right now - you'll burn it. 4) If you want to speed recovery, apply a light liquid seaweed biostimulant (I use Garden Valley brand from Ace Hardware in Ridgewood). The brown patches are almost certainly just summer dormancy, not dead grass. Give it 2-3 weeks after temps cool below 80 and you'll see it green back up. Patience is key!

Oh c'mon Steve, nobodyneeds fertilizer in JULY lol. That's the worst advice. Plus DeSalvo's is good but expensive - I always tell people to hit Bergen County Ag in Little Ferry instead, better prices on everything. Honestly just leave it alone, water properly, and it'll come back. Adding random fertilizers at this time of year is how you get fungus problems. I learned that the hard way my first summer in Teaneck.

Wow thank you all so much! I'm cutting at probably 2.5-3 inches which is likely too short apparently. I had no idea. So to clarify - I should water 2-3 times a week for 30-40 minutes each time instead of daily? And raise my mower height to 4 inches? I have a Toro from Home Depot, nothing fancy. Is it worth upgrading to a mulching blade? Also - the crowns still seem anchored when I pull on them, so hopefully it's just dormancy!
