Dethatching - is it really necessary?
Dethatching Lawn Care

My lawn has a lot of thatch - maybe 1 inch thick. Should I dethatch? I've heard it can damage the lawn if done at the wrong time. Is it worth renting a power rake or should I just leave it alone?

Great question! Here's the simple rule: thatch under 1/2 inch is actually GOOD - it buffers temperature and helps retain moisture. Over 1 inch is a problem. At 1 inch, you're borderline. I'd recommend dethatching, but timing is crucial: **Best time for NJ**: Early fall (late August - early October). This gives your grass time to recover before winter. **Spring option**: Only if your lawn is heavily compacted and you MUST do it. Spring dethatching can leave your lawn vulnerable to summer stress. **Alternatives to consider**: 1. Core aeration - actually better for most lawns! It relieves compaction AND helps decompose thatch naturally 2. Topdressing with compost - encourages beneficial microbes that break down thatch Rent a core aerator first - if you still have thatch issues after aerating for a season, THEN consider dethatching.
