Anyone in Bergen County successfully use Milorganite without neighbor issues?
Milorganite Smell

Hey everyone, been lurking here for a while. I'm in Paramus and have a decent-sized backyard (about 4000 sq ft) with tall fescue that came with the house. I've wanted to switch to Milorganite for years but every time I think about it, I remember how my neighbor across the fence complained last time I used Scott's (said it smelled like death or something lol). My wife is already warning me not to make the yard smell like garbage before her sister's graduation party at the end of May. For those who've used it successfully - what's your secret? Do you water it in immediately? Apply in the morning vs evening? I'm willing to drive to Hackensack or Fort Lee to get it if needed.

Oh man, I hear you. Been using Milorganite exclusively for going on 8 years now in Rutherford. The smell is real but totally manageable if you respect a few basic rules. First - NEVER apply when it's gonna rain hard within 24 hours. You want that initial moisture to soak it in but not wash it away. Second - water it in WITHIN 2 HOURS of spreading. Don't let it sit dry on the surface. Third - timing matters. I do mine first thing Saturday morning and by Sunday afternoon you'd never know I applied anything. The odor is basically gone once it's watered in and starts breaking down. Only thing I'd add - stop by the Hackensack ACE Hardware on Main Street. They usually have fresher stock than the big box stores. Old Milorganite smells WAY worse.

Just curious - does anyone use the liquid Milorganite versions? I saw some at Garden Center America in Ramsey and was wondering if those work as well for the tall fescue. Less smell probably? Also I'm fairly new to this (first year with my own lawn in Englewood) - when exactly IS the right time to apply? I keep hearing fall but also see people doing spring applications. NJ Zone 6b/7 stuff confuses me honestly.

Quick professional take from someone who does dozens of lawns in Bergen County every season: Fall is definitely your best window for tall fescue and KBG. I'm talking late September through mid-October ideally. The grass is actively growing roots still, temps are cooling down, and you're setting yourself up for strong root development heading into winter. Liquid version works okay for light feeding but won't give you the same long-term soil benefits. You're paying for convenience, not results. For the smell issue - and I'm being honest here - it's 100% about product freshness and watering technique. Grab bags that have been sitting in a hot parking lot all summer? Throw those back. The sulfur smell intensifies big time. And WATER IT IN. I can't stress enough. Dry granuals = stinky yard for days. Watered-in granules = nutrient release with minimal odor by hour 4 max. Pro tip: If you're really worried about neighbors, call them beforehand. Sounds awkward but my clients who do this rarely get complaints. Most people appreciate the heads up.

Oh I completely agree with the fresh product point. ThatHackensack ACE is clutch for that reason - their turnover is way faster than the big retailers. Last bag I got there was manufactured like 3 weeks prior. Night and day difference in smell honestly. And yeah the neighbor heads-up thing sounds dorky but it WORKS. I did that my first year and my nextdoor neighbor actually ended up asking me to do his front yard too lol. Now he's on the Milorganite train. Also random question for the soil guy - what do you think about the Cornell studies showing phosphorus runoff issues? Been meaning to ask if that's actually a concern in our area or more of an academic worry.

Okay so update - wife approved the May 24th application (sadly it's NOT a graduation party anymore, her sister moved it to June BUT the weather looked good and she said just do it). I went to ACE and grabbed two bags. Fresh indeed - 'manufactured March 2025' printed right there. Applied yesterday morning around 7am, hit it with the sprinkler for about 45 mins around 8:15, and honestly? Barely any smell left by dinner time. Walking the dog this morning you'd never know I put anything down except for the nice dark green starting to pop. My neighbor? Didn't even notice. Success! Thanks everyone - this sub is actually helpful which is rare lol
